Pigeon peas (Cajanus cajun), a perennial legume, are one of the most popular beans of India, where they, together with chickpea and lentil, are called "grams." If you live in a quite southern zone where it doesn't frost, this is an excellent legume for you. It takes at least 5 months to start bearing but then will continue for up to 5 years. It gets up to 8 feet tall, supporting that on woody stems, and is dense enough that some people grow it for a hedge as well as a food producer. Plant in full sun. The yellow flowers are pretty, and Cajanus seeds, though small, are highly nutritious. Use like green peas when seeds are very young and green, or else let mature and dry and use like shell beans.
