Eating the Atkins Way Must Have Special Advantages

In addition, Atkins can effectively and quickly make a positive impact on many of the most common annoyances that patients reveal in the privacy of their doctor's office. In all my years of practice, I've heard and seen it all fatigue, irritability, depression, trouble concentrating, headaches, insomnia, dizziness, joint and muscle aches, heartburn, colitis, premenstrual syndrome, water retention and bloating. For the lion's share of patients, Atkins is a specific prescription against such ills.

Many prescription medications also inhibit weight loss. For a list of these medications, please turn to Chapter 20, page 262. If you take one or more of the drugs listed, you may be disappointed in your weight loss results. Talk to your doctor to see if an alternative can be found. Functional properties

Sweet marjoram appears to have a stronger effect on the nervous system than its wild cousin (Balz, 1999 Chevallier, 1996). Sweet marjoram is a good general tonic, helping to relieve anxiety, headaches and insomnia. The herb is also thought to reduce sexual desire (Mahindru, 1994). Junemann (1997) mentioned that marjoram oil relaxes and alleviates tension, both mental and physical, and is used in natural healing for many complaints accompanying or caused by tension. Guba Ron (2000) reported that essential oil of marjoram has menstrual-regulating or hormone-like effects.

Functional properties and toxicity

Swiss mice showed sedation after lavender oil (1 60 in olive oil) was orally administered (Guillemain et al., 1989). Lavender inhalation showed a similar effect (Komori et al., 1997). The positive effects of lavender oil as treatment for insomnia was indicated in a limited study of four elderly people (Hardy et al., 1995). A Japanese patent application for the usage of several monoterpenes (which can be incorporated into food such as chewing gums) as brain stimulants and or enhancers of brain activity was filed by Nakamatsu (1995). Certain central neurotropic effects of lavender essential oil were shown by Atanassova-Shopova and Roussinov (1970). A more detailed account of physiological and other effects is given by Buchbauer (2002).

Toxicology and disease

Rosemary is generally considered safe and devoid of toxic side effects if taken in recommended doses. However, there have been occasional reports of allergic reaction such as skin irritation. Pregnant and lactating women are advised not to use rosemary, as are pepole with epilepsy. Rosemary oil should be used with caution by persons suffering from hypertension, blood pressure or insomnia cfm). In vitro studies of liquid extract of rosemary ('Herbor 025') and a mixed oily extract of herbs such as rosemary, sage, thyme and oregano, though proven to be antiviral against HIV, is found to be cytotoxic too (Aruoma et al., 1996). Rosemary leaves in excess quantity can cause coma, spasm, vomiting and, in some cases, pulmonary oedema. Rosemary oil taken orally can trigger convulsions Rosemarych. html).

Coffee

The stimulating property of coffee is due to the alkaloid caffeine, together with an essential oil. Like tea, it contains an astringent. Coffee is more stimulating than tea, although, weight for weight, tea contains about twice as much theine as coffee contains caffeine. The smaller proportion of tea used accounts for the difference. A cup of coffee with breakfast, and a cup of tea with supper, serve as a mild stimulant for an adult, and form a valuable food adjunct, but should never be found in the dietary of a child or dyspeptic. Coffee taken in moderation quickens action of the heart, acts directly upon the nervous system, and assists gastric digestion. Fatigue of body and mind are much lessened by moderate use of coffee severe exposure to cold can be better endured by the coffee drinker. In times of war, coffee has proved more valuable than alcoholic stimulants to keep up the enduring power of soldiers. Coffee acts as an antidote for opium and alcoholic poisoning. Tea and coffee...

Physical Activity

It improves blood cholesterol levels, manages high blood pressures, prevents bone loss, boosts energy levels, helps to manage stress and improves the ability to fall asleep quickly and sleep well.

Valerian

A number of clinical studies support valerian's traditional reputation as a sedative herb. It helps insomnia sufferers to fall asleep more quickly, wake less often during the night and generally experience a better night's sleep. In contrast to some pharmaceutical sedatives, it is very rarely associated with side effects, and doesn't tend to cause sleepiness and difficulty waking in the morning. 0 IXIS (,i Infuse 3 g dried valerian rhizome in boiling water and drink 1 cup an hour before bedtime. Alternatively, take commercial preparations according to the manufacturer's instructions. Valerian works best when it is taken every night over a period of several weeks, rather than when taken occasionally.

Passionflower

Sleep problems with anxiety Passionflower is traditionally taken to aid insomnia - especially when sleep troubles are accompanied by nervousness or anxiety - so it is ideally suited to those whose insomnia has an emotional basis. Although there hasn't been much scientific research into passionflower's actions, there is some preliminary data to support its traditional applications. Herbalists commonly prescribe passionflower in combination with other relaxing herbs, such as valerian. 0 DOS To treat insomnia, infuse 2 g dried passionflower leaves in boiling water and drink 1 cup an hour before bedtime. For anxiety, take the same dose twice more during the day. Like valerian, passionflower may take several weeks to achieve optimal effect. If valerian worsens insomnia and or causes exceptionally vivid dreams, discontinue it and try an alternative herb.

Menopause

An extract of the North American herb black cohosh has been used to relieve menopause symptoms for more than 50 years. As the subject of numerous clinical trials, black cohosh extract has demonstrated significant improvements in symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, depression and anxiety. Of these, it is probably most effective against hot flushes, which many women consider the most troublesome aspect of menopause. Some research indicates that hot flushes may be reduced by more than

Canned Laughter

Once month a television crew from the local station, KORN-TV, arrives at the Inn, accompanied by Aunts Ivy and Millie, who are local media celebrities. They like to use our library to tape some of their TV programs. The library has wide-plank wood floors, tartan-patterned wallpaper and one whole wall of book shelves. Over the fireplace are framed eighteenth century hunting scenes. There's a leather sofa and plaid wingback chairs with good reading lights that are comfortable enough to invite you to curl up with a good book, but straight enough to keep you from falling asleep. It's a very masculine-looking, lord of the manor' sort of room which makes an interesting backdrop for these two grey haired ladies' fireside chats.

St Johns worl

While black cohosh is very effective for the treatment of hot flushes, night sweats and insomnia, its effects against the anxiety and depression that sometimes come with menopause are less marked. Consequently, herbalists often prescribe it with St. John's wort for women whose menopausal symptoms include emotional upset. When the two herbs were taken together during a 2006 study, significant improvements were noted in both the psychological and physical symptoms. In other research, St. John's wort alone demonstrated a significant ability to reduce menopausal symptoms in women whose primary concerns were mood-related. 0 DOSACiK Buy supplements that are standardized for their content of hypericin and hyperforin, which are considered to be the main active constituents, and with a daily dose of 900 mg per day of the concentrated (6 1) extract, equivalent to 5.4 g of the dried herb.
