The Answer

In such a condition, the body does not allow insulin to do its job (hence, the term insulin resistance) therefore, the glucose level in the blood remains elevated. I advocate that everyone take this test. However, if you are overweight, have diabetes in your family tree, have high blood pressure or high triglycerides, or have symptoms that appear when you are hungry and clear up when you eat, I must insist that you get a GTT.

The Cluster Effect

In 1988, Reaven noted a clustering of risk factors for coronary artery disease, all of which were associated with high insulin levels and increased insulin resistance .6 These included hypertension, high triglyceride levels and decreased HDL cholesterol-the kind of cholesterol that has been found to be heart protective. Reaven has dubbed this collection of risk factors Syndrome X, and the name has stuck. Medical articles refer to the syndrome, and popular health books discuss it. Now let's reverse this line of thought. High blood pressure, high triglycerides, low HDL and being overweight all turn out to be consistently associated with high insulin levels. In other studies, it has been shown that bone health was not compromised and that renal (kidney) function was found to be stable on controlled carbohydrate diets. Supporting what we know from years of clinical practice, there is even scientific literature on hyperlipidemia (elevated blood fats-i.e., cholesterol and triglycerides), showing improved values on controlled carbohydrate diets. What's even more exciting is that the controlled carbohydrate group enjoyed further health benefits-far from suffering the dangers some warn of with the controlled carbohydrate nutritional approach.
