Salvia officinalis Traditionally used to reduce hot flushes

Sage is not only a popular culinary herb, but also a widely used traditional remedy for the relief of hot flushes. The plant is rich in tannins, giving it astringent properties and supporting its use to reduce excessive bodily secretions. In addition to hot flushes, these drying properties may benefit other menopausal symptoms such as night sweats and heavy periods. Laboratory studies have demonstrated that some compounds in sage possess estrogenic effects, which may further help to explain its traditional use in menopause.
