Pointers for Success

• Read labels carefully. Most commercial ketchups, barbecue sauces and other tomato-based sauces contain sugar or corn syrup and are high in carbohydrates.

• Shop in your local health food store, where you are likely to find products and brands not available in most supermarkets, including a wide range of sugar- and wheat-free baked goods.

• Make salad dressings at home. Not only are they tastier, but homemade dressings are sugar-free and contain all natural ingredients.

• Keep bottled lemon juice tucked away on a refrigerator shelf; lemons can be expensive and spoil quickly. A splash of bottled juice mixed with a packet of sugar substitute and some ice water makes instant lemonade.

• It is important to add variety to your diet through condiments, spices and new recipes.

• Butter and cream sauces should be occasional treats, not a daily part of your eating plan.
