Can I drink alcohol now that 1 am in OWL

The body bums alcohol for fuel when alcohol is available. So when it is burning alcohol, your body will not burn fat. This does not stop weight loss it simply postpones it. Since the alcohol does not get stored as glycogen, you immediately get back into lipolysis after the alcohol is used up. But keep in mind that alcohol consumption may increase yeast-related symptoms in some people (see Chapter 25) and interfere with weight loss. If it does not slow your weight loss, an occasional glass of wine is acceptable once you are out of Induction so long as you count the carbohydrates in your daily tally. (A 31 2-ounce glass of wine contains about 4.3 grams of carbohydrate.) Spirits such as Scotch, rye, vodka and gin are acceptable, but do not mix with juice, tonic water or non-diet soda, all of which contain sugar. Seltzer, diet tonic and non-aspartame diet soda mixers are permitted. If you have added alcohol to your regimen and suddenly stop losing weight, discontinue your alcohol intake.

Eat Foods Very High in Fiber

High fiber foods such as beans, vegetables, and high fiber cereals help regulate your blood sugar this is important for people with diabetes, as well as someone recovering from drug and or alcohol abuse. The craving for sugar after recovery is due to problems with blood sugar regulation. High fiber foods also help to lower your cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Most gastrointestinal problems, such as heartburn, constipation, and chronic diarrhea, can be helped by eating high fiber foods (and avoiding high fat foods ). Eating foods high in fiber helps weight loss by creating a sense of satiety (satisfaction), so you'll eat less and still feel satisfied. High fiber foods also decrease your risk for cancer. Your goal is to take in more than 25 grams of fiber each day.

In my No Nonsense Nutrition DVD I discuss the idea that 90 of your diet should be eating the best foods while 10 can come from lesser foods. Therefore alcohol ingested during your 10 is probably ok. Alcohol ingested the rest of the time -probably bad. Same thing with most natural foods.

The Great Fat Meltdown

Out-of-control blood-sugar levels, a condition that can occur as well in alcoholics and people in a state of extreme starvation. Ketosis and ketoacidosis may sound vaguely alike, but the two conditions are virtually polar opposites. They can always be distinguished from each other by the fact that the diabetic in ketoacidosis has been consuming excessive carbohydrates and has high blood sugar, in sharp contrast to the fortunate person doing Atkins.

Fact vs Fallacy

Part of this fallacy is the claim that ketones can build up to dangerous levels in the body. Studies show that ketone bodies are very tightly regulated in the body and will not increase beyond the normal range in healthy individuals. (Uncontrolled diabetics, alcoholics, and people who have been on prolonged fasts might see an increase in ketones beyond the normal range.) The body regulates ketone levels the same way it regulates blood-glucose or pH levels.' And in the clinical setting of my practice, it has been repeatedly demonstrated that overweight patients produce just enough ketones to meet their immediate needs for fuel-and no more. A person will have no more ketones after three months of controlling carbohydrates than they do after three days. It is highly unlikely that people, other than insulindependent diabetics, will build up ketones.
